Name: James Hamon

Title: Associate

How did you get started in accounting?

I went to Virginia Tech and originally majored in marketing. But since you don’t take your core classes until your junior year, I took a required introductory accounting class as a sophomore and really enjoyed it. After considering that, as well as other factors, I switched my major to accounting and the rest is history.

What was your first accounting job?

I’m a 2014 college graduate, so this is my first job in accounting.

What are you most passionate about professionally?

I’m most passionate about achieving some measure of personal success within the field of accounting. Being new to the profession, it feels a bit like my future is a blank canvas. I’d like to start shaping that by achieving many of the goals I have set for myself. That thought excites me and keeps me motivated for the future.

What do you like most about being an accountant?

I like the fact that there’s always something to strive for. Even if something is done correctly, it seems like there’s always a faster and more efficient way to do it. I think that daily challenge keeps me interested in the work that I’m doing.

If you were not an accountant, what would you be doing?

In a perfect world, I would have some sort of job that requires you to be very involved with a professional sports team. It’s something that I’m really passionate about and I think it would be really cool to work in the front office or something of that nature.

What is your favorite place to go on vacation?

I really enjoy going to Dewey Beach up in Delaware. It’s been a family tradition for over a decade now and it never seems to get old. The weather’s always great and I can’t complain about getting to hang by the ocean for a week!

What is your favorite book and why?

Of all time – The Harry Potter Books. Right now, I would have to say the Game of Thrones novels. They’re taking me awhile but I keep promising myself that one day I’ll make it through them!

What is something people don’t know about you?

It’s a weird little fact, but I actually don’t have a sense of smell.
